I woke up around 2am last night with little L. She’s had a cough and couldn’t get settled enough to get back to sleep. While I’m sitting in the rocking chair cuddling with my little sweetie I hear the dogs start barking and a light shining past the windows, looking much like headlights. “Wow” I thought “Who in the world would be pulling up at this time?”. Upon further inspection I realize it isn’t headlights, it’s the neighbor shining a spotlight across the fields looking for something. Well, I haven’t heard any gunshots and out here in the country that’s good. Probably not coyotes he’s after. I think I hear faint rumblings of tractors in the distance and this keeps up for about an hour, then picks up again about 10 minutes later with a second neighbor now joining in the search. My husband gets up this time. We discuss goings on and scenerios that could prompt this late night behavior. He notices the dogs are looking out back at the woods and decides to go take a look. He catches one of the neighbors on his tractor close enough to flag down and finds out there is a cow loose. It’s not his cow, nor a cow belonging to the second neighbor. They have an idea about who it belongs to but can’t be sure.
These two men were at it for at least 3hours last night, and back at it again first thing in the morning. Up looking for a loose cow that didn’t even belong to them. I feel so blessed to have neighbors willing to look out for one another like this.
Here lately I’ve rediscovered the art of crochet. I picked up this little talent when Little S was very small. Once he got a bit bigger and turned into a monkey climbing all over me it became hard to keep up! Now that little S is bigger and little L is happy playing in the floor I can crochet my heart out while watching them play. This keeps them happy that I’m nearby and keeps me happy staying busy. Now, what to do with all this stuff! I’ve got an ever growing pile of scarves and hats stacking up 🙂
This little guy is happy to get his camo hat!
My solution, start a boutique! I can sell crocheted items in winter and sew sun dresses in the spring. After all, in FL we only have two seasons anyway.
Follow me on FB to keep an eye out for giveaways and special offers.
For those of you who don’t know already, yes, we homeschool and love it! I started out deciding to give it a yr to see how it goes and here we are in yr 4 still going strong. My boys amaze me all the time how smart they are and how much they pick up so quickly. We do also school yr round. I decided early on there is no reason for us to stick to the public school schedule. I think this came up our first summer. We had a short break but I missed them! We all went in our separate directions in the house and I missed that quality time of us working on something together. At that point we started back up with the school work. They were happy, I was happy, so why not?
My husband has recently sent me a couple of articles on Sabbath Schooling. You take the same sabbath principle of 6 days of work and resting on the 7th. If this is a schedule given to us by the Creator why not follow it in other aspects as well? I’ve just completed our new school schedule where we work for 6 weeks and take a break on the 7th. We’ve never really had a planned out schedule like this before. I’m a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl but this feels really good. We are actually able to take off the entire month of December for the Christian holiday season, and also have a month off around the fall Jewish holidays. Still having a few weeks left to play with and have our 180 days of school required by the state. It all fit together beautifully.
Now we are going into our new school year and this new idea has me feeling a bit energized and ready to get to it! Hopefully this will help us keep up a good pace and decrease the risk of burnout 😀
Ryder has been studying rocks and minerals in our homeschool studies lately. We came across an experiment to place drops of vinegar onto limestone. We don’t have many rocks around here, and I’m not confident enough to be able to identify what we do find so I sent him off to collect some pebbles from the dog kennels. I figured we’d just see what happened. So the boy goes off and comes back with bits of chalk…..Not what I had in mind. Is chalk even a rock? I know how to make chalk using plaster, and I don’t think that’s what we were looking for. So I tell him we need to read further in his book and see what was supposed to happen. We read on and shortly learn chalk is a type of limestone!!!! Huh, it is so easy to put them off, but he is now at that age where I have to start listening, he may just be a bit smarter than I am!
One thing about me is I LOOOVE to make things!! Whether it’s cooking, sewing, or making home made natural products, I love to create. People keep asking me what to do for diaper rash. The best thing I’ve ever done is use home made baby wipes. It’s all natural, with no harsh chemicals that can make a rash worse. To make the wipes themselves, I started using squares of flannel and finished with a zig zag stitch around the edges. Now that I’m on baby #4 I don’t care so much about how they look. I’ve started cutting old t-shirts into hand sized squares and they’re ready to go. No finishing necessary.
As for the wipes solution:
1cup warm water
1 Tablespoon Castile soap (or whatever you use for baby, this helps keep the solution from going bad so quickly)
2 Tablespoons coconut oil (I like mine a little on the slippery side, also acts as an antiseptic)
2 Tablespoons aloe juice (of course is great for preventing, healing, and soothing a rash)
It’s that simple! This is perishable so you’ll want to make a new batch every few days or so, or keep it refrigerated.
Made a quick trip back home this weekend for a bridal shower. It was a fun shower, everyone was nice, not too many games 😉 But I have to chuckle at the vast difference from how my life was before compared to now in the midst of our new adventure into farming. Here I am surrounded by women who live pretty much how I used to. They’re chatting about how much they love Bed Bath and Beyond, what scents they like best with the lotions, and what movies they’ve seen recently at the theater. I’m so removed from these things by this point all I really have to add is “I got some goats”
So while I’m not quite well versed enough to carry on a good conversation about dressage, or the different horse breeds to keep up with some of the locals here, at least I know I’m learning and there’s no turning back now!!! Hey, I even caught myself looking at some pink camo sunglasses yesterday lol.
Now it’s time to take some water to my husband who has been working on the excavator all day digging a pond for our ducks, and check on my son who is out grooming the horses 😀
Goats are notorious for escaping. They never stay where I put them lol. For some reason the grass in the front yard is way better than the grass out in the fields. The other day those little boogers escaped on me at least 4x, yes, it was excessive lol. Later I’m sitting playing Farmville2. My son Ryder is peeking over my shoulder and says “Mom, the goats are out again” so I go look out the window………he was talking about the game……..I think I need stop playing Farmville2 and focus on the real Family Farmville lol
There was a snake in my shower today, yes a SNAKE!!! In MY house!!!! I walk into the bathroom and see it hanging it’s creepy little snakey tail out of the shower. I jump back and gasp, fortunately after several years of marriage my husband can tell my cues from the other room 😀 He yells out “What’s wrong?” There’s a snake!!! “How big is it?” About 3 or 4 feet!!! Eeeek!!!
So here he comes to my rescue. Grabs the snake with one of those pick sticks ( ❤ those ) Of course when he comes out with the snake I see it was really just a baby rat snake. Guess my imagination has bested me again
Feeling pretty homesick right now. I’ve done pretty good up until now, took what nearly 6months to catch up with me? I really love it here, I love the farm and our life we’re building here. The people are friendly and welcoming. I just miss my friends and family back home.
I went to a mom’s group the other night and it really set in. This was the first time I’ve gone anywhere without the kids or Chris. I guess I’m just used to having that buffer. I missed having people around me who I know on a deeper level. Friends I’ve had for a few years at least. There’s only so much small talk you can make, there’s only so many times I can explain to people how many kids I have, their ages, and why we moved here before it’s just enough. Mom’s groups back home I would have had my core group of homeschool friends to go socialize with, here I have a couple I feel like I can call “friend” but as for the group as a whole I just don’t feel like I belong yet. When they’re all together they are more apt to discuss more personal things with each other and I almost feel uncomfortable like I really shouldn’t know some of the stuff I know about these ladies especially if I don’t even know their names!!!
Then there’s the friends back home, thanks to FB it’s great to keep in touch but also sad to see everyone moving on with their lives without us 😦 Friends who used to comment and like everything I posted I haven’t heard from in months. I guess it’s just hard being the new person and right now I feel stuck in the middle.
This morning I woke up feeling better, the weather was pleasant outside, there was a nice breeze. Not much on the schedule so it’s a great day to get caught up on things around the house. The kids and I just hung around in the driveway playing with the babies (kittens, puppy, goats)
One of those perfect moments where you can feel the Lords reassurance, letting you know your on the right track. So I’ll keep sucking it up, keep trying my best to overcome any shyness in me and do my best to make friends with other mom’s not only for my sake, but for the sake of my kids, so they can have friends around on a regular basis as well. Here we go!
I’m home one evening with the kids and my mother n law. The men folk were out of town for the weekend. Sitting, enjoying the sound of the rain, when I hear the car alarm go off. Uhoh, I have to go outside and physically put the key in the door because the keyless entry is broken :/. As I turn to go back inside there’s a loud thunderous BANG right behind me, loudest noise I’ve ever heard!!! My heart about leaps out of my chest and in my mind I turn and there’s an army of Braveheart looking guys rushing at me with painted faces and huge sticks in hand jumping up from behind the car and coming at me from out of the woods.
(don’t judge, who thinks rationally when they’re scared out of their wits like that!) Trying to play it cool because hey there’s the kids watching, I do that little speed walk kids do when they say “I’m not running” back to the safety of my home. But only a few short minutes later the alarm goes off again!!! Nuh uh not me this time lol, fortunately my mother in law is a very brave woman who volunteered to go take care of the car this time. She said she was a bit unnerved by having to go out there too but man o man what would have I done without her!!
